Avian and Equine Pathogens
PennVet and New Bolton Center are developing rapid and easy detection solutions for multiple avian and equine pathogens directly at the point of need using Biomeme.
Researchers in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Pennsylvania and New Bolton Center are developing laboratory reagents for rapid, specific, and sensitive detection of multiple avian and equine pathogens. In one study, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae were detected from tracheal/oropharyngeal or eye swabs as well as Equine Herpes-1 and Streptococcus equi subs. equi from nasal swabs. Rapid and efficient surveillance in the field is possible.

“Foot‐and‐mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of livestock that requires rapid control. Early detection is critical but transportation of samples to laboratory delays testing. Sensitive and specific field‐deployable assays are therefore desirable.” (Hole and Nfon 2019)
Scientists at the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease, Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Department of Animal Science at the University of Manitoba have used the Biomeme platform to achieve sensitive and specific results.
WCS Siberian Tiger Project
The Wildlife Conservation Society is working to combat the spread of Canine distemper virus in Siberian Tigers.
The WCS Siberian Tiger Project is the world’s “longest running radio-telemetry based tiger research and conservation effort.” Recently, their attention has turned to combatting Canine distemper virus (CDV) which has an associated mortality rate as high as 50% in captive tigers over the past 15 years.
