DNA barcoding technology has made it possible to authenticate and monitor product at every stage of the global supply chain. Testing for Seafood Fraud with TRU-ID

Oceana has released a new report in which they found fully ⅓ of seafood samples are mislabeled nationwide (read the full report). TRU-ID is attempting to change this and are committed to ensuring food authenticity. In collaboration with scientists from the University of Guelph's Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, they have demonstrated that Biomeme can be used in the fight for food integrity (view the full poster). Barcoding and Border Control in the Ornamental Fish Trade

With over one billion fish annually moved between 100 countries, the ornamental fish trade is "one of the largest commodity sectors in the world". Unfortunately, it is also a route for pathogen translocation and trafficking of endangered species. Dr. Alejandro Trujillo-Gonzalez is trying to make a difference. He and his colleagues continue to develop gold standard protocols for biosecurity border control and Biomeme is working to provide them with the tools to bring the lab to the sample. Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion

Rapid detection allows for control of biofilms and successful MIC mitigation.

Estimates suggest microbiologically influenced corrosion is responsible for more than 20% of corrosion costs worldwide (source). Mycoplasma and other contaminants

Due to their small size, ubiquity in the environment, and "ability to persist without noticeable changes to cell culture," mycoplasma are infamously challenging to detect. Additionally, current methods of testing "can take up to 28-days to complete and require a significant amount of manual manipulation" (source). Biomeme is here to help. Bacteriophages that may attack starter cultures in industrial fermentation processes

Despite the best efforts of producers, "phage infection represents the most significant biological factor affecting industries that rely on bacterial growth and metabolic activities" and may even lead to lost batches (source). In order to help mitigate this risk, DSM and Biomeme are working together to develop on-site tests for Mesophilic Phage.

Detecting Legionella pneumophila in cooling towers

Legionella pneumophila is a deadly pathogen found in water systems. Buildings are at risk from Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks because Legionella bacteria in cooling towers can reach outbreak levels in as few as seven days. Culturing methods for Legionella pneumophila require immense time and labor investment while too-often returning poor sensitivity and reproducibility. Testing anaerobic bacteria/archaea without removing them from glove box
